The capital of Portugal is situated on the river Tagus, and the city and its surroundings, have much to offer. Lisbon is rich with a history of exploration and discovery with many buildings and monuments reflecting its maritime past, ancient monuments blending in with modern architecture, tiled walls and cobbled streets, and clanking trams that take you around the quaint old quarters.
With a slow and relaxed pace, yet contemporary and buzzing, the city has a zest for life which is reflected in its wide choice of restaurants and nightlife – you will be spoilt for choice!
Nearby are the must-visit towns of Sintra and Cascais. Described by Lord Byron as “this glorious Eden”, Sintra is an UNESCO World Heritage Site and is renowned for its outstanding natural beauty and historic interest; whilst the old fishing port of Cascais, situated on the coast, is now a glamorous seaside resort with a wide range of restaurants and shops, excellent tennis and golf amenities, plus a marina. There are also a good range of Atlantic beaches reachable within half an hour drive from central Lisbon.
There is always something happening in Lisbon, whether it ‘s a street party to celebrate a local saints day, or a major international sports event, or one of its many concerts, which vary from rock to opera, and these are just some of the reasons to visit.
